Humble ME Oh Lord
Text: 2 Samuel 7:18 and 19
“18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human!” (NIV) Amen
One day, Nathan the prophet visited King David and revealed the covenant God wanted to make with David (vs.8-17). In this covenant, God pledged to make David the head of an everlasting dynasty. A dynasty which resulted in the birth of Jesus Christ.
In response to this prophetic revelation, David went before God and prayed the prayer stated in our text today. It is important to note that when David asked, “Who am I?” he was not expressing low self esteem or worthlessness but rather a sense of wonder and amazement at this great promise of God.
In the text, David referred to God as Sovereign Lord three times and said nothing about his own accomplishments or worthiness. This demonstrates David’s humility and recognition of God as his source of all things. Perhaps this humility was one reason God chose to establish a covenant with him and make him the head of a dynasty.
Beloved, humility is a powerful key to unlocking our blessings. It was a major emphasis of Jesus’s teachings. To be humble is to be free from pride and arrogance. To know that in our flesh we are inadequate, yet we also know who we are in Christ.
Let us learn what God through the bible teaches us about humility.
Prayer: God teach me to be humble in all my ways that I may live a life pleasing to you.
